Recruiting Camps/Clinics/Showcases

All of these events; camps, clinics and showcases are an important part of the overall recruiting process as they will create and assist with exposure to college coaches for the student athlete looking to play lacrosse in college.

We often receive questions from families about the recruiting process.  The question below is from parents of a younger player.....

My son went to xxxxxxxx Camp this past summer as a rising freshman. We just got an email from a Division II coach saying that the coach saw him play at xxxxxxx Camp and invited him to participate at a prospect day this fall.

I was wondering if you had any idea what these prospect days are? I know every college and coach is different, but I was curious if you had any familiarity with prospect days?

Prospect days allow you an opportunity to be seen by college coaches and sometimes are an expression of interest from a college coach if they invite you personally to one. It is not a recruitment but more an interest to see the player again. A request for more information. Most Prospect Days are small in numbers and give the particular college staff a real close look at you/your son as a player. With that said, the player better be ready to perform as one of the very best at that Prospect Day! And as a player I am sure this is what you wrestle in your mind with? Discuss with your son a couple very important questions before he attends a Prospect Day.

  • Are the schools attending a school of interest for your son?
  • Is the school hosting the event one your son is genuinely interested in? Top 10 Choice?
  • Will your son benefit by attending this Prospect Day? If the above are so, then yes, he will benefit!
  • Is it Geographically Convenient?
  • Financially Easy to do?

As a parent, if your son attended every Prospect day he was invited to you might go broke! If you are on the fence look at the last two questions regarding geography and finances. If it is easy to get there and financially easy as well, why not?

An opportunity to get better and play against solid competition will only help the player in the long run. Attend the prospect camp which makes sense and fulfills the answers to the questions above. Remember, by attending a Showcase/Recruiting Camp, the player is exposed to lareger number of college programs and coaches at one venue. The idea is to get noticed!

As a player, make the recruiting process your own. Do not worry about other kids. Enjoy the process. Everybody's recruiting story is different. It is never too late to get recruited so keep at it and work hard. It pays off!

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Consider the value versus the cost of an elite program. All player's and at all ages should be learning/enjoying the sport.
  • So much changes between their 8th grade year and four years in high school.
  • Approximately 50% of players who commit at early ages actually end up at the school they committed to. They change their mind, the college coach may change his mind, the prospect may not continue to grow physically, grades may not be up to standard to get in to the school, the prospect may get lazy. There is a-lot which can happen!
  • Enjoy the process as it relates to your son...Your son will transform both physically and mentally over the next couple years.

Note recommendations may or may not be needed for a specific event, please talk with the WHS coaching staff if interested in a particular camp, clinic, showcase or prospect event. Also, you may want to check with a specific college coach of a college you may be interested in attending to see if they will be attending one of these events as either part of the staff or as an attendee. Keep in mind participation space at some of these camps, clinics and showcases is limited, so do not wait to register!
