Tryout Information

2025 WHS Boys Lacrosse Tryout Information

*Per VHSL | FCPS | WHS Policy: Player Assessments Will Be a Minimum of (3) Days

*To be eligible to tryout, players must have passed (5) classes the previous semester. If there is a question to your eligibility, contact Coach Polizzotti prior to February 24th.

*Player Assessment Criteria: the Coaching Staff DOES NOT believe in the sense of entitlement regarding players being selected and invited to participate in our program simply because they played in the program the previous spring (whether on JV or Varsity). Although the majority of players trying out in 2025 made either JV or Varsity the previous season, in 2025 all of our returning players MUST NOT be of the mindset where because they were on a roster the previous season (JV or Varsity), they will automatically be selected and invited to participate in the program again. Put the off-season work in, improve and earn an invite to participate on the 2025 JV or Varsity team.

*New Underclassmen Players Are Always Welcome to Participate and For the Most Part They Will Make the JV Roster. *Note, Regardless of Experience Seniors Are Not Allowed to Play JV Will Need To Tryout for Varsity.

BE READY AND IN SHAPE, WE WILL HAVE CONDITIONING TESTING THROUGHOUT THE WINTER OFF-SEASON. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO ATTEND OUR OFF-SEASON SESSIONS AND DO THE WORKOUTS ON YOUR OWN IF YOU PLAY OTHER SPORTS SINCE YOUR OFF-SEASON AVAILABILITY AND PARTICIPATION IS LIMITED. FOLLOW THE WORKOUTS AS PROVIDED OVER THE SUMMER-FALL. BE DILIGENT AND DISCIPLINED TO DO THE WORK ON YOUR OWN.

All of our student athlete's are "Good Kids" and with the number of players trying out for each level, being a "Good Kid" cannot and will not be justification for keeping someone in the program.

*** WHAT ARE YOU DOING EACH DAY TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE? ***

Coaches assess and evaluate ALL new and returning players on the idea of promoting them to the next level. ALL returning players must show improvement from the previous season along with demonstrating potential for future growth and development. All new and returning players are expected to be in good standing, academically-socially and with all paperwork completed and submitted on time, (submit no later than 5:00 PM Friday, February 21, 2025) and are able to demonstrate the following criteria to the coaching staff during the assessment time period:

  • Character, Class, Commitment, Courage, Physical Attributes, Mental Acuity
  • Program Representation: Coachability-Attitude. Player listens to the coaching staff and demonstrates a TEAM 1st attitude with a willingness to learn and apply as being coached our programs fundamentals, skills & schemes.
  • Program Representation: Attitude-Desire-Effort-Work Ethic. Player demonstrates a can-will do attitude and tries his best during every drill, attempts to develop his skills to the best of his ability.
  • Athletic Ability-Conditioning: i.e. agility, endurance, footwork, speed, strength & etc. Player is able to complete all runs, and his time is in a sufficient amount of time. Due to the short pre-season and early season possibility of inclement weather, all players must come into the season in GREAT shape and ready to contribute Day 1. YOU HAVE TO DO THINGS ON YOUR OWN AND WITH THE TEAM IF WE ARE ABLE TO HAVE WORKOUTS.
  • Stick Skills: players possess and demonstrate the necessary skills at grade level or above, showing the ability to pass, catch, cradle, pick up ground balls, shoot & etc. on the move and with both R-L hands, and defensive positioning.
  • Understanding of the Game-Field Awareness: Ability to comprehend, process and execute lacrosse specific tasks in relation to game situations. Player demonstrates an understanding of the flow of the game and knows when to shoot, pass, or create a play (offensively, defensively and in transition situations).
  • Time Commitment: Players must attend all tryouts-practices and learn to manage their time.

Since lacrosse is a sport of skill and it requires endurance, speed and agility, many college programs ask for times during the recruiting process. Thus, to assist with recruiting at the next level we will attempt as best as possible to get all student athlete's times throughout the year for various running metrics and weight training metrics.

*Mile, 800, 400, 300S, 100Y, 40Y, 5/10/5 Pro Agility and To Give You an Idea of the Times:

  • High End Times: Mile = 6:05, 800 = 2:40, 400 = 62 secs, 100 = 11.5 secs, 40 = 4.7 secs
  • Target Time: Mile = 6:30, 800 = 2:55, 400 = 70 secs, 100 = 13.0 secs, 40 = 5.0 secs
  • Low End Times: Mile = 6:55, 800 = 3:10, 400 = 78 secs, 100 = 14.5 secs, 40 = 5.3 secs

*Although student athletes cut from other spring sports will have the opportunity to tryout a minimum of (3) days, they will not be allowed join us for a tryout after Wednesday, March 5th and they will be required to test accordingly.

*Estimated Roster Sizes - Varsity: approximately 25 players || JV: approximately 25 players

*With the improved skill development, the overall competitiveness and the high level of lacrosse being played by the HS programs in our area, it is highly recommended and in the best interest of each individual player to attend ALL or as many off-season sessions as possible to assist them in improving accordingly to meet the assessment criteria as noted above.

ALTHOUGH WE WANT YOU WORKING ON YOUR OWN DOING THE LONELY HOURS WORKOUTS, DO NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF BELIEVING DOING THINGS ON YOUR OWN IS THE SAME OR WILL ACHIEVE THE EQUIVALENT RESULTS AS PARTICIPATING IN OUR OFF-SEASON OTA'S...COME TO THE OFF-SEASON ACTIVITIES AND FOLLOW THE WORKOUTS PROVIDED OVER THE SUMMER-FALL.
